Why doesn’t my RV bed match a regular mattress size?
The short answer — RV manufacturers build around limited space, slide-outs, and weight restrictions, so they created their own set of sizes that only loosely resemble what you’d find in a house.
The Most Common RV Mattress Sizes
• RV Short Queen — 60” x 75” (5 inches shorter than a standard queen). This is the most common RV bed size on the road today.
• RV Queen — 60” x 75” to 60” x 80”, depending on the manufacturer.
• RV King — 72” x 75” to 72” x 80” (a few inches narrower than a standard king).
• Three-Quarter — 48” x 75”, often found in smaller trailers and older rigs.
• RV Twin / Bunk — anywhere from 28” to 38” wide, 74” to 80” long, and often used in bunkhouses or over-cab sleeping areas.
Notice the pattern? Almost every RV size is a little shorter or narrower than its residential equivalent.
That’s by design — every inch in an RV is fighting for space.
Why a Regular Mattress Usually Doesn’t Work
A standard home mattress is often too long, too heavy, and sometimes even too thick for an RV platform. It can also prevent slide-outs from closing properly, which is a bigger problem than most people realize until it happens in a parking lot somewhere off the highway.
How to Know Which Size You Need
The safest way is always to measure your existing mattress or the platform itself — width, length, and height — before ordering a replacement. If your numbers don’t match a “standard” RV size exactly, that’s common too. A lot of rigs, especially Airstreams and older trailers, have rounded corners or slightly odd dimensions that call for a custom size rather than an off-the-shelf one.
